Public Footpaths

Local public footpaths and bridleways around Darrington are maintained and legally safeguarded by Wakefield Council under the authority of the Highways Act 1980 and Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. These routes, marked in red on historic maps, crisscross the parish linking farmland, neighbouring villages, and parts of Wentbridge, Carleton, Grove Hall, and West Park.

Walking organisations like the Peak & Northern Footpaths Society (PNFS) play an advocacy role—monitoring path conditions, reporting obstructions, and supporting Wakefield Council in maintenance and signage. Additionally, volunteer-led initiatives such as Slow Ways are expanding walking networks radiating from Darrington to adjacent settlements such as Askern, Knottingley, Pontefract, and South Elmsall.
